Year 8 Rugby

On Wednesday evening the Y8 Rugby travelled the short distance to Southam RFC to host Princethorpe.

In cold and blustery conditions Princethorpe raced into a 30-0 and the Southam boys were shell shocked. Some honest words were had at half time and the Green and Blacks were reinvigorated. 4 quick trys from Hugh, Jacob x2 and Joe C were reward for some quality rugby at the start of the 2nd half. At this point Princethorpe were on the ropes as Southam played the best rugby of the night. The forwards carried well and secured quality ball for the elusive Southam backline to utilise. Unfortunately the strength of the Princethorpe bench allowed them to bring on fresh legs and they began to gain ball whilst playing down the slope, scoring 2 further trys.

Final score Southam 25 – 40 Princethorpe

Great effort boys, you showed what you are capable of when you play as a solid unit.

Year 8 Netball

Last night the Year 8 netball team travelled to North Leamington School for the League ‘cup’ semi-final.  North Leam started off strong creating a 4-1 lead. and then extended this lead to 6-2 in the second quarter. However, we didn’t let this faze us! After a half time team talk we, fought strong in the third quarter!  Isla and Eva worked hard in the circle forcing the shooters to make errors. The centre court consisting of Rosa, Charlotte and Phoebe H puts lots of defensive pressure on the passes turning over lots of ball as well as making great movement to get the ball into our shooting circle. Alexia and Phoebe B were on form with their shooting! This whole team effort took us into the lead after the third quarter with the score ending 8-7 to Southam. We knew the last quarter was going to be tight having only a one goal lead. The team continued to work hard putting pressure on every pass allowing us to turn over possession! Hannah worked hard against the shooter keeping her from receiving the ball to shoot. This led to us extending our lead and taking the win with the final score being 11-9 to Southam!

So proud of you all and looking forward to the final in March!

Southam vs Princethorpe

On Thursday evening the Y8 team travelled to Princethorpe for the final game in this season’s fixture block. Reports if a prospective muddy pitch proved true due to the pre match rain (and also highlights how luck we are at Southam to have the fantastic Astro playing surface) but nevertheless the team set themselves the task of imposing themselves upon the opposition from the outset. Playing with the advantage of the slope, Southam dominated the whole half and controlled play in and around the Princethorpe goal. Only a fantastic save from their keeper kept out a pile driver strike from Jamie M from fully 30 yards, and even when the keeper was beaten, the post denied Luca V a well deserved goal.

Half time 0-0 but the whole team were aware that they should have been well ahead on the scoreboard.

This was exacerbated when the team were caught with a sucker punch in the second half as Princethorpe scrambled in the first goal. The boys did not let their heads drop and continued to press and harry their opponents all over the pitch. A well worked corner saw a Princethorpe player catch the ball, unfortunately for him, he was not the goal keeper. Captain Jamie sent the keeper the wrong way and coolly stroked the penalty into the opposite corner.

With 10 minutes to go the team pushed for victory and were rewarded with a incisive finish from Jesse D. A fantastic run on the left wing by Alex M saw the ball fed to Ethan who drew the defender and laid it in a plate for Jesse. He dummies the keeper beat a despairing dive from a defender and again found the bottom corner.

Final score 1-2 and a well deserved victory that was a reward for the overall work rate from all 12 players.

Special mention for Zac G, who broke up countless attacks, but MOM was Reece who ran tirelessly all day, building attacks from midfield but also running back to help stifle his opposite players.

Well done boys, really proud of the performance tonight.
