Netball League Final

The Year 8 team played well throughout the season to qualify for the league ‘cup’ final against Kings High School. The girls started off well putting lots of pressure on Kings High coming down the court. Kings crept in front after the first quarter with the score being 4-2. Southam worked really hard as a team in the second quarter there was some great interceptions in defense by Isla, Eva and Rosa bringing the score within 1! Unfortunately Kings pulled away in the second half, despite this we had excellent shooting from Alexia and Phoebe B as well as great feeds into the circle and defensive work from Phoebe H, Charlotte and Hannah. The final score ended 13-8 to Kings. The girls should be really pleased of how they played as team! Thanks to everyone that came to watch.

Oppositions player : Eva

Well done, super proud of you all and you have all been a pleasure to coach this season!

Miss Carro

Y8 Rugby finished their Rugby season with a bang.

On Thursday afternoon the Y8 Rugby team travelled to Leamington RFC to play in the Leamington Invitational Tournament. The boys were in positive spirits following their recent outing against Princethorpe.

Unfortunately, only Aylesford turned up, so the team found themselves in the final by default.

What followed was an aggressive display that embodied everything that the team had been asked to implement. The front 5 won every scrum and provided a consistent stream of possession from which multiple attacks were launched. 19 trys were scored in total in a 95-0 victory.

Scorers were:

Jacob S 4

Hugh PB 2

James R 3

Ollie S

Jamie M 2

James M

Corey M 2

Ethan M

Tom OM

Joe C 2

Well done to all 12 boys who played.

British Inter-County Cross-Country Championships

3 of our girls took part in the British Inter-County Cross-Country Championships at Prestwold Hall on Saturday, competing for Warwickshire against the best runners from around Great Britain. On an undulating, muddy course around the scenic estate in blustery conditions our athletes acquitted themselves fantastically well. Rosa W ran in the U13 Girls race and finished an excellent 180th, Ana Lovett was in the U20 women’s category and came home in 113th, the 3rd Warwickshire athlete, and best of all was Madeleine Jacks who finished 68th and the second Warwickshire scorer.

Congratulations to all 3, as just getting to the event was a massive achievement in the first place. All 3 are running again next week in the English Schools XC Championships in Kent, along with 4 more Southam Girls, so watch this space for more Cross-Country news next week.

Schools Orienteering

SchoAny students who have enjoyed taking part in Orienteering during their PE lessons and would like to have a go at a competitive course outside of school can come along to the Memorial Park, Coventry next Saturday between 11-12 for the event organised by our local team, Octavian Droobers.

You can enter on the day, but please let Mr MacGibbon know if you are thinking to attending so that he can give numbers to the organisers.

Why not do the Parkrun there at 9am as a warm-up!!!

Year 8 Netball Tournament

On Wednesday Southam took two teams to the emerging schools tournament.

Team 1 – Alexia, Phoebe B, Phoebe H, Charlotte, Hannah, Eva, Isla and Rosa

Team 2 – Aiofe, Poppy, Erin, Edith, Tilly, Scarlett, Sienna and Louise

Both teams played amazingly from start to finish. Defensive pressure was applied throughout the court, lots of interceptions in the circle and great shooting!

This led to Team 1 finishing 2nd in their pool and Team 2 finishing 4th in theirs!

Well done girls, proud of you all!

Hygiene bank collection 2022

As part of Southam College’s celebration of International Women’s day 2022, we are asking staff, students, and the local community to donate essential toiletry and hygiene products to Coventry Haven Women’s Aid. Coventry Haven Women’s Aid provide emergency shelter and essentials for vulnerable women and families affected by domestic violence.

Please place all donations on the table at reception by Friday 18th March 2022.

All essential toiletry and hygiene products collected will go to providing basic and essential hygiene to those living in poverty and victims of domestic violence.

Hygiene poverty is being unable to afford the everyday items most of us take for granted, from basic washing products to essential toiletry items.

• Toothpaste/Toothbrush (child/adult)

• Shampoo

• Shower gel

• Deodorant

• Hairbrush/hair ties

• Nappies

• Baby wipes

• Toilet roll

• Laundry detergent

Together we can challenge hygiene poverty.

Yr 7 & 8 Sportshall Athletics Area Finals

We took our Yr 7 & 8 girls and boys Sportshall Athletics teams to compete at Myton against other schools in the area.

There was a great atmosphere in the sportshall, and our runners cheered each other on for every race.

We started with the obstacle relays, and then moved on through the 2, 4 and 6 lap races, before finishing with the 8 lap paarlauf and the 4x 2 lap relay. Whilst the track events were taking place, our students were also competing in the field events. There were lots of fantastic performances, and we had many winners.

At the end of the event, we sat down for the results:

Both our girls teams finish a very respectful 3rd and our boys teams both finished 2nd.

Well done to everyone that took park and we look forward to lots more athletics after Easter.
