On Tuesday evening, the year 8/9 girls football team travelled to Market Harborough to play Robert Smythe Academy in round 2 of the ESFA National Cup.
Despite a long journey, this didn’t deter the girls. Southam kicked off and within 45 seconds had taken the lead after a powerful run from Evie before a great strike into the far corner. Southam continued to play attacking football and created a number of chances through Eva, Holly and Ella. Grace saw her double effort brilliantly saved by the goalkeeper but the ball did fall to Connie to score with a lovely strike from 20 yards. The defence made up of Sophie, Rosa, Bella and Edith protected Frankie in goal and the score was 2-0 at half time.
The second half continued in the same way with Southam playing lots of attacking football. The opposition keeper continued to make lots of saves. The third goal came after a corner was palmed down to Faith to tap in from 3 yards. Robert Smythe did get a goal back but almost instantly Southam attacked and put pressure on the defence which lead to an own goal. Southam saw the game out with good defending from Ariana and Edith. A fantastic team performance and a 4-1 win.
Player or the match- Ella for tremendous work rate and lots of excellent hold up play!
Roll on round 3.
