Southam vs Princethorpe
On Thursday evening the Y8 team travelled to Princethorpe for the final game in this season’s fixture block. Reports if a prospective muddy pitch proved true due to the pre match rain (and also highlights how luck we are at Southam to have the fantastic Astro playing surface) but nevertheless the team set themselves the task of imposing themselves upon the opposition from the outset. Playing with the advantage of the slope, Southam dominated the whole half and controlled play in and around the Princethorpe goal. Only a fantastic save from their keeper kept out a pile driver strike from Jamie M from fully 30 yards, and even when the keeper was beaten, the post denied Luca V a well deserved goal.
Half time 0-0 but the whole team were aware that they should have been well ahead on the scoreboard.
This was exacerbated when the team were caught with a sucker punch in the second half as Princethorpe scrambled in the first goal. The boys did not let their heads drop and continued to press and harry their opponents all over the pitch. A well worked corner saw a Princethorpe player catch the ball, unfortunately for him, he was not the goal keeper. Captain Jamie sent the keeper the wrong way and coolly stroked the penalty into the opposite corner.
With 10 minutes to go the team pushed for victory and were rewarded with a incisive finish from Jesse D. A fantastic run on the left wing by Alex M saw the ball fed to Ethan who drew the defender and laid it in a plate for Jesse. He dummies the keeper beat a despairing dive from a defender and again found the bottom corner.
Final score 1-2 and a well deserved victory that was a reward for the overall work rate from all 12 players.
Special mention for Zac G, who broke up countless attacks, but MOM was Reece who ran tirelessly all day, building attacks from midfield but also running back to help stifle his opposite players.
Well done boys, really proud of the performance tonight.
